Two Bills wearing pink shirts stopped at the Post-Gazette lobby just minutes ago with the news that Primanti's is releasing a new sandwich tomorrow.

"We always said we'd release a new sandwich when pigs fly," one Bill said, and then handed me a news release about the "When Pigs Fly" sandwich: Turkey, ham and bacon topped with a fried egg as well as the signature fries and slaw, AND cheese, lettuce and tomato.

I politely declined the pink T-shirts they offered, but was happy to accept a couple of the sandwiches, which I offered to my right-hand gal, Gretchen McKay, and the three summer interns who happen to be sitting with us in the food room.

Dedicated journalists all, they dug right in, even though it was only 11 a.m.

"I gotta be honest -- I don't love it," said Matt Nussbaum, who hadn't had a Primanti's sandwich yet. He seemed to be getting the hang of it, noting, "I'm going to eat the whole thing."

Albert Anderson, who has had Primanti's before, said, "It's got too much bacon for me not to love it."

"It's got too much coleslaw for me to love it," said Matt, who set out to remove some of it.

"It think it's too much everything," said Kate Mishkin, also tasting Primanti's for the first time.

"My god -- that's a full-day's meal," said Gretchen, after photographing the sandwich from the side to show the layers, and in Albert's hands, to show its sheer baconness.06232014ajsammie
As the word leaked out, other people from around the office made their way back to us and started snarfing pieces.

"Don't tell anyone I'm eating this," said dining critic Melissa McCart.

The news release says the sammie is to be available for a limited time only -- at least until Aug. 31.

The launch party is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today --Tuesday, June 24 -- at the original Primanti Brothers at 46 18th Street in the Strip District. The first 50 customers get coupons for a free sandwich on their next visit if they buy a When Pigs Fly at the party.

As if one of these big boys isn't enough.

Matt did indeed finish his entire half sandwich, and then split another half with not-Melissa.

"I think it's actually pretty good now that I've taken the coleslaw off," he said. "It lets the bacon come out."

12:47 p.m. postscript: The PG's intern coordinator, Rosa Colucci, stepped into the food room after reading this post and announced, "I've brought TUMS."

"Actually, I'll take one," Matt said, and he did.
