Luma is indeed open and it shares a patio with the new Hitchhiker Brewing Co.

lumaleboAs Bob Batz. Jr. reported this week, Mt. Lebanon is getting a new beer place -- Hitchhiker Brewing Co., which opens tomorrow.

The brewery shares a patio with Luma, which is a different location from the Aspinwall Luma that closed in February. This Luma is indeed open.

Here's the backstory behind the two Lumas. Chef Michael Rudman and Greg Ackerman opened Luma in Aspinwall in 2002. Richard Stern --  in this week's column -- used to visit often and eventually befriended the partners.

The three of them decided to open Willow in Ohio Township in 2004. Two years later, Mr. Ackerman gave up his share of Willow to focus on Luma in Mt. Lebanon, which opened in 2007, co-owned with Mr. Rudman.

By 2013, the partners split, with Mr. Rudman in charge of the Aspinwall location and Mr. Ackerman running the Mt. Lebanon location. The Aspinwall Luma closed in February.

While he'll share the patio with the brewpub for the season, in October, Mr. Ackerman will build a glass-walled room separating the space. The room will expand seating during regular service and it will be available for events. He hopes construction will be completed by the December holidays.
