Tessaro's builds a patio, expands dining room

Written by Melissa McCart on

tessarosTessaro's in Bloomfield is in the process of expanding to 4603 1/2 Liberty Ave. which will allow the restaurant to add indoor seating and introduce an outdoor patio.

"The rumors are true," said Moira Harrington, co-owner.

She had just wrapped up a meeting with architects and designers when I spoke to her this morning. The city zoning board has approved the expansion and they're now "in the throes of trying to get this thing going."

The Harringtons took over Tessaro's from Richie Tessaro in 1984. Butcher and cook for more than 20 years, Dominic Piccola grinds meat in house and Courtney McFarlane grills the patties over hardwoods. It's the simplicity of this technique that has helped make Tessaro's a burger destination, but the owners have kindled the spirit of the place. The family affair is now run by sisters Moira and Mike and their mother Tresa "Tee" Harrington. Tee's son, Kelly, the burger aficionado, died in 2009.

The last time the restaurant expanded was 1995, to 4603 Liberty, the building next door to the original location.

Ms. Harrington hopes to have the things completed by mid-to late summer, though she's not certain this best-case scenario is realistic.

"We were hoping to be done with this by last year."
