Brad Kohut, executive chef for Burgatory, has returned from Vegas having earned sixth place for his signature burger in the World Food Championships held Nov. 7 to 9. He said his burger featured "Burgatory's proprietary mix," smoked sea salt, goat cheese, jalapeno jelly, arugula and Granny Smith apple on brioche browned with shallot butter.

Chicago's Second City Smoke took home first place and $10,000 for best signature burger.

The burger events featured 50 chefs competing in a tournament-style cookoff. Contestants were culled winners of city competitions such as the Denver and Sacramento Burger Battles; Philadelphia Burger Brawl; Houston Press' Best Burger; Minneapolis CityPages' Best Burger and elsewhere.

The 2013 World Food Championships pulled additional competitors for categories that included best BBQ, chili, sandwich, recipe, dessert and bacon. More than 450 restaurants and home cooks competed for $300,000 in prizes.
