A taste of Chicago, Downtown

Rejoice! Tootie's Famous Italian Beef has set up a food cart Downtown.  The cart from Karl Horn's South Side shop debuted last Tuesday at Smithfield St. and Fourth Ave. In good weather through the fall, expect to find Tootie's cart here from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Tootie's roast beef sandwich is among my favorites, as I had mentioned in a round-up of the best of Pittsburgh's sandwiches this past winter.

As P-G writer Dan Gigler reported when the shop opened, Mr. Horn's take is comprised of shredded beef that's been slow-cooked for up to a day in a family secret recipe of 12 spices and three vegetables, with pepperoncinis for a little zing, served on a hoagie bun with provolone.

"It's my mom's recipe. She's been making it my whole life," the 33-year-old entrepreneur said.

With the debut of the cart, Mr. Horn has unveiled a new sandwich: the 4' Chick: a spicy, sweet slow-roasted chicken sandwich that rivals the original Italian beef.
