Eats from the week: Hot wings, jerk and giardiniera

Written by Melissa McCart on

This was a banner week of eating, with a good excuse from the food section to put together a picnic. There are too many delicious choices to list them all, so I've chosen a few.

gardinera1) Giardiniera from Dish Osteria on the South Side
I heard that chef Michele Savoia was heading out of town for a couple weeks so I wanted to catch what dishes he's making to savor summer. I liked this elegant giardiniera with eggplant caponata, marinated oil-cured olives, rosemary chickpeas and various summer vegetables. I also liked listening to a story of the beauty of lemon granita served over brioche in the Siciilian neighborhood where he grew up.

edgars2) Edgar's lengua and chorizo tacos in the Strip District
Having recently reported on Casa Reyna and PGH Taco Truck, I've been craving straightforward Mexican street tacos. On a hot summer afternoon, these were pretty terrific.

kitchenonmain3) Kitchen salad from The Kitchen on Main in Ligonier
I went for the first time to Ligonier and Ohiopyle and ended up having lunch at this newish spot from Josh Fryer, the son of Jeff Fryer of nearby Out of the Fire. Breakfast all day and solid sandwiches highlight the menu. This salad with brie, almonds, Fuji apples, and other goodies was indeed a satiating lunch.

wings4) Hot wings from Smokin' Joe's Saloon on the South Side
A friend is taking me on a beer-and-wings tour of Pittsburgh and this was my first visit to Smokin' Joe's for extra-crispy wings. They were a good start to the tour.

jerk5) Jerk chicken at Bayardstown in the Strip
I had an excuse to put together a picnic for the food section, so I made jerk chicken from this recipe for a magical night at Bayardstown. It went over well, as this recipe always does.
