There's something about fall's cooler weather that gets me thinking about Italian food, especially homemade pasta, which my husband has become quite adept at making over the past few years. One of my family's favorites is cheese ravioli, made here with pumpkin and fresh nutmeg for a subtle taste of fall.

For some people, the fruit of fall is the apple, but this time of year always makes me hunger for plums. I've been buying a lot of them from my farmer friend Frank Zibritosky, including damson plums, which are for cooking rather than eating.

I love cooking with rice noodles because they're so darn easy: just soak 'em in hot water, and they're ready to go. Here, the transparent noodles are the star attraction in a slightly sweet simple stir-fry that takes less than 20 minutes to toss together -- perfect for those nights when you're running from one activity to another.
